Ten Important Vitamins for Women

By: J.Morgan

There are lots of different types of vitamins out there and each one has a specific function or purpose in the body. If you are a woman, particularly a young woman or a woman at a moment of growth or significant change in your life (pregnancy, menopause, etc) then you may need additional vitamins or supplements to keep you feeling healthy. The most essential vitamins for a woman are as follows:

  1. folic acid

  2. zinc

  3. iron

  4. B vitamins

  5. calcium

  6. Vitamin C

  7. Vitamin E

  8. chromium

  9. iodine

  10. Omega-3 fatty acids

These 10 essential vitamins greatly contribute to the healthy life and body of a woman. They are also very important to the changes that a young woman will go through in her life and as she matures. Zinc is one of the most overlooked of the 10 essential vitamins. Many women do not get the proper amounts of zinc needed in their life. It is very helpful as an antioxidant and to help rid the body of toxins and it forms many of the hormones that a woman needs to be healthy.

Vitamin E is also used as an antioxidant within the woman’s body. Another very important vitamin in the woman’s body is B6. This can help decrease symptoms of premenstrual disorder and can help ease discomfort that comes with the monthly cycle. Iron is important during the young years and also to compensate for blood loss during menstruation. Loss of iron can lead to many complications such as reduction of red blood cell production and anemia. Iodine helps with water retention.

Calcium is of equal importance in a woman’s life from childhood to adulthood. Calcium gives you strong and healthy bones and helps prevent osteoporosis. Women are at a greater risk for bone disease and calcium can help combat this.

While each of these ten vitamins is important to the healthy growth and development of the woman’s body, it is equally important to seek the advice and care of your physician before taking any supplements. Overdose of vitamins is very common and can result in serious consequences or even death (such as iron overdose). You should never try to self-medicate, even with vitamins or “natural” supplements. Just because something is natural does not mean that it’s not still dangerous, especially when taken in large doses. In the case of vitamins and other supplements, more is not always better and in fact, can be quite the opposite.
