A pregnant woman may need vitamins or supplements to help her give birth to a healthy baby. Not only do these additional nutrients help the development of the baby but they also help the pregnant mothers body manage with the strain of the growing life inside her. Folic acid is also known to help reduce birth defects in the unborn infant.
Men and women over the age of fifty can greatly benefit from additional amounts of the B vitamins, especially B12 which can help prevent mental disorders and conditions like Alzheimers. Increased doses of Calcium and Vitamin D can be very helpful to womens health. These are just a few examples of the situations where someone may want to take vitamins and supplements to aid their health.
Vitamins help us today because we do not get the suitable nutrients from our diet alone anymore. This is partly due to our lifestyles and the types of foods we eat. Most foods today are about convenience and this takes away from the nutritional value.
As you can see, there is a long list of benefits of supplements and vitamins. There are numerous vitamins and uses that we did not have time to cover here in this article. It is equally significant, however, to bear in mind that vitamins and supplements are not a replacement for a doctors care and if you are currently taking prescription medications or undergoing medical treatment, you must inform your doctor before taking any vitamins or supplements to avoid a possible drug interaction.
